I met Kelly and began Band Camp as a freshman September 1978. Kelly remains one of the very most influential people of my near 60 year life. My gratitude is deepened sharing it with a fellow Bruin like you, who beyond his many shortcomings, saw his great gifts and recall them here with a detail that fills my heart all over again. I was in formation on Cal field when he collapsed on it. I did not learn what had happened until Half Time was over. My boyfriend was the Band Manager, and as close to Kelly as one gets without an instrument in your hand. I knew so much about him from the Field and behind it, and what he gave of himself then still matters. So much. After all… “it’s the little things” that will stay with you forever from an experience – especially the Solid Gold ones. Thank you so much for this.

I graduated the year before you arrived– and knew many people in the band, of course, at that fateful Cal game. Yeah, he was one of the professors who stands out in my memory!
